Whakatāne Extension

This project features the renovation of the clients existing home, located in Whakatāne, Bay of Plenty. The family’s changing needs drove this project, prompting the creation of an extension for additional bedrooms, and the modernisation of existing areas, such as the kitchen and dining spaces.

The extension was designed as a modern integration to the existing style of the home. Brick veneer cladding was utilised on the lower level, to match the existing cladding. Additionally, prefinished vertical cladding can be seen on the first floor, its dark colour a modern counterpart to the original mansard style roof. Timber, in similar tones to the existing and new brick cladding, becomes a connecting feature between the two forms.

Additional to the extension, the client requested an update to the existing kitchen and dining spaces. A new kitchen layout makes the space more comfortable to use, while maintaining functionality. Changing cabinetry, flooring and wall finishes also lighten and brighten the space, while the solid stainless steel benchtop becomes a feature of the space.

Partition walls between the kitchen and dining rooms were removed completely, creating one consistent space. Additionally, walls were removed around the existing bay windows, allowing this space to become a feature, with a built in bench seat dining nook.
